Donald Trump plans to go mano e mano with the NRA and wrestle a commitment from this leading gun rights group to prevent people on the government’s terrorists “watch list” from buying guns. This move goes directly again the traditional Republican stand on gun restrictions.

The NRA just released a statement that says the FBI should investigate anyone who is on a terrorist watch list, and if that person tries to buy a gun, the gun sale should be delayed, according to Reuters.

Trump’s move could force Republican lawmakers to put in place new gun restrictions, after a gunman killed 49 people and wounded another 53 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday. According to the killer’s work record as a security guard for the international company G4S, he was very proficient in weaponry.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey is currently leading the Democratic charge by filibustering anti-gun control legislation. Democrats intend to keep up the pressure on Republicans.

Although the FBI investigated the shooter in-depth and over a nine month period, he could not legally be placed on a watch list. The NRA, a powerful political lobbying organization is quite influential in halting gun control legislation, and it has endorsed Trump. The Republican presidential hopeful addressed members of the National Rifle Association during their annual meeting on May 20, 2016.

Trump tweeted:

‘I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.’

In November, Trump said he would support weapon restrictions for a person on a “watch list” and who is “an enemy of state.”

Even though the majority of Americans support background checks, the Republicans have traditionally fought any effort to restrict guns, either by the Democrats or President Barack Obama.

Trump accuses the Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton of wanting to abolish the Second Amendment, which gives people the right to bear arms. She denies his claim. On Monday, she commented that she was “bewildered” by Republicans blocking Democrats’ legislation to restrict gun sales.

Another Republican, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania has already started a bill that prevents people on those terrorism watch lists from purchasing guns. Toomey has worked with Democrats for gun control, after a shooter fatally wounded 20 little children and six educators in a Connecticut elementary school in 2012.

The NRA opposed that legislation, and congressional Republicans killed the bill.

The FBI keeps two different “watch lists.” The first is the “no fly” list that does not let certain people fly into or out of the country. The other list of a million names of people who are traveling which puts them under greater security. The Orlando mass murderer, son of Afghan immigrants, was on the second list.

The NRA tweeted Tuesday that stopping people on watch list from purchasing guns is “ineffective, unconstitutional, or both.”
