Few members of Congress are as respected across both sides of the aisle as the Republican senator from Arizona, John McCain. News of his battles with brain cancer have rocked the country and prompted an outpouring of support from Republicans and Democrats alike.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, McCain’s daughter and co-host of The View, Meghan McCain, gave the country its first new update on her father’s health in quite some time.
Meghan told Colbert that:
‘My dad, as everyone probably knows, he has glioblastoma multi-form grade four, which is brain cancer. He is in Sedona, Arizona, right now at our ranch doing physical therapy and he has amazing doctors and he’s doing really well.
‘It’s a really, really scary cancer. My family is no different than any other family who has experience with cancer.’
It is no secret that McCain has not exactly had the warmest of relationships with President Trump, who questioned McCain’s status as a war hero and POW by saying he prefers heroes “who were not captured.” However, McCain’s absence at Trump’s first State of the Union earlier in the week was not a protest, as many Democratic members of Congress chose to do.
‘He had a sort of rough time at Christmas and he’s made this crazy amazing recovery which I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at, he is so resilient in so many different ways. He’s a tough bastard. He’s doing well and I hope he comes back to Washington very soon because I would like to see him go up against Trump a little more.’
McCain has not been silent during his absence, nor has he given Trump a break during his recovery. While the GOP pushed for (and Trump delivered) the release of the controversial Nunes memo in order to undermine the nation’s top law enforcement bureau and justice department, McCain opposed the partisan move in his signature, no-holds-barred style.
‘The latest attacks on the FBI and Department of Justice serve no American interests — no party’s, no president’s, only Putin’s.’
