Back during the 2016 presidential election, there were moments throughout the campaign where many believed candidate Donald Trump was done for. Despite all the deplorable things he said, he still managed to win the election. However, how close did he come to being replaced by the Republican National Committee during the Access Hollywood tape fiasco?
Apparently, it came pretty close according to The Atlantic. In a profile written by McKay Coppins, RNC chairman Reince Priebus and Vice President Mike Pence were ready and willing to do whatever it took to rescind the Republican nomination Trump won and let Mike Pence take over.
Considering how much Pence seemed to worship Trump, that’s surprising in one way but not surprising in another. Pence is by far one of the most “devout Christians” in politics. He refuses to dine with women alone, even for business, to avoid temptation, and he calls his wife “Mother.” He’s definitely something. However, he accepted the invitation to be Trump’s vice president, and Trump is beyond reprehensible. How Pence could ever put up with someone who goes against his “values” is unknown.
However, with the revelations that Pence offered to revolt against Trump and take the nomination from him, it points out that Pence sees Trump for what he is – a disgusting scumbag. The fact Pence still serves under him, however, is just as revolting, but he did it to win the White House. The only way the religious right would have ever fallen in line with Trump is because of Pence.
Coppins writes that though Pence considered leaving the campaign after the Access Hollywood tape came out, he was actually planning a revolt within the party to take Trump’s place as the Republican nominee for president.
‘But in fact, according to several Republicans familiar with the situation, he wasn’t just thinking about dropping out-he was contemplating a coup. Within hours of The Post’s bombshell, Pence made it clear to the Republican National Committee that he was ready to take Trump’s place as the party’s nominee.’
With that offer, the RNC actually considered it.
‘One Republican senator called on the party to engage emergency protocols to nominate a new candidate. RNC lawyers huddled to explore an obscure legal mechanism by which they might force Trump off the ticket. Meanwhile, a small group of billionaires was trying to put together money for a “buyout…”‘
Coppins noted there were rumors of Pence taking the nomination for president and Condoleezza Rice serving as his vice presidential candidate.
Trump never dropped out, and the RNC never removed him, however. Trump went on to win the White House, and Pence became the vice president of the United States. Despite his own personal beliefs, Pence stuck with Trump. Perhaps, he did it because he knew someone like Trump couldn’t last four years in the White House, and he would end up president anyways.
With that being said, what kind of reaction would Trump have to such news? Pence has played the part of a loyal puppy dog following the orange man perfectly. He’s also saved Trump many times. Every time Trump says something that evangelical Christians take issue with, Pence comes to his rescue. Will Trump now eye Pence with caution and distrust?
We hope so. Trump needs the extra paranoia in his life to help him break under the pressure of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Being unable to trust anyone will surely send Trump over the edge.
